The University of Minho is the best Portuguese institution and 130th in the world in the “UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2024”, which evaluated the environmental sustainability of 1477 universities around the world and which has now been published. UFMG has been a national leader since 2017, when it debuted on the list in this ranking, and stands out this year in water use, waste treatment, education and research. The podium of this ranking includes Wageningen University (Netherlands), Nottingham Trent University (United Kingdom) and the University of Groningen (Netherlands).
The results demonstrate that environmental sustainability is an identity mark of UMinho, it is part of a strategic leadership commitment in this area to build a healthier, vibrant and participatory community, with a view to a better future. They also reveal the institution's efforts towards sustainable development through teaching, research and knowledge transfer, as well as in its internal practices, policies and procedures.
Dean Rui Vieira de Castro says that higher education institutions have “an additional responsibility” in sustainability, considered the main solution to global challenges according to entities such as the United Nations, the World Economic Forum and the Business Council for Sustainable Development. UMinho remains committed to its sustainable development strategy, placing emphasis on articulation with the SDGs of the Agenda2030.
